Hughes Rack Conversion
Project notes
I was tasked with redesigning an existing Hughes Rack, or H-frame distribution transformer rack, located in Downtown Springfield, Missouri. The rack currently serves several major commercial customers and utilizes an atypical 120/240 V delta-delta configuration consisting of a three-transformer, three-phase bank and a separate single-phase transformer.
The project involves converting the existing overhead distribution arrangement to an underground system while evaluating how the existing single-phase and three-phase customer services can be consolidated and supplied from a new transformer-bank configuration. The design requires consideration of transformer loading, service voltage compatibility, secondary conductor requirements, metering arrangements, and the feasibility of supplying both single- and three-phase loads from a common bank.
A significant challenge is routing new underground facilities through a congested downtown environment without disrupting existing electric, communications, water, gas, and other buried infrastructure. The proposed design must balance electrical capacity, constructability, service reliability, utility clearances, and future maintenance access.
The overall goal is to replace the existing rack and overhead conductors with a safer, cleaner, and more efficient underground distribution system. In addition to modernizing the electrical infrastructure, the project will reduce above-ground equipment, improve the streetscape, and create a safer and more visually appealing environment for businesses and pedestrians in Downtown Springfield.
